KEEP COOL:
FORTIFYING BRITISH COLUMBIA
In 2017 and 2018 British Columbia experienced devastating wildfires that reshaped the province. From the ashes, a surprisingly complex “war machine” arose to reforest the scarred land. Keep Cool: Fortifying British Columbia explores this machine, the key players involved, and the significance of government-designated Old Grown Management Areas in the province’s north.

ABOUT THE FILM
Keep Cool: Fortifying British Columbia is my biggest project to date, and my best attempt so far at illustrating my vision for documentary storytelling and editing. Produced at One Tree Planted and in collaboration with Zanzibar Holdings, their long time tree planting partner in British Columbia, the film presents the complex chain of decision makers, experts and laborers involved in planting a single tree in the ground.
From the mayor of a local forestry town down to the individual tree planter, there are many steps along the way to assess the damage and determine a plan of action. This includes the establishment of Old Growth Management Areas - government designated forest zones that are off limits to the logging industry.
This complex process is also a highly collaborative one. Many stakeholders are involved, including local and provincial governments, the federal government, the forestry industry, non-profits such as One Tree Planted, and of course First Nation tribes who live on the land and are the most directly affected by the disastrous wildfire events. These complicated but ultimately productive relationships result in millions of trees being planted.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Keep Cool was a huge challenge but an extremely fulfilling project. With only about 6 days of shooting spread out across two trips an entire year apart, we had limited resources, and the initial plan during the first shoot was to produce a 3-5 minute YouTube video. Thanks to the generous guidance of our partners, Zanzibar Holdings, we had the opportunity to meet and interview many more people than expected, and I knew this had to be a bigger story. The project gradually grew in scope in the edit, eventually landing at the 30 minute runtime of the final film.
From chasing after extremely fast tree planters across treacherous forest floors, to learning how to fly a drone to get the aerial shots for the film, this was a learning experience I will never forget. Fortunately, I had great help from my colleagues, especially fellow cameramen Everett Bumstead and Matthew Talarico. Likewise, huge thanks also to Tony and Nicole Harrison, who helped plan the logistics and arranged for us to see so many people and places in such a short span of time, making sure everyone was ready and available for us to film. I am extremely grateful for everyone’s time and participation during the production process, and I hope the film does justice to their story.
